Western University of Health Sciences

A Hub for Medical Education in Oregon

Addressing the complex health needs of Oregonians requires innovative education and community engagement, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest (COMP-Northwest), located in Lebanon, Oregon, exemplifies this approach through its commitment to producing compassionate physicians and fostering community partnerships that enhance health outcomes across the state.

Established in 2011, COMP-Northwest serves as a vital institution for medical education in Oregon. As part of Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest offers a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program, emphasizing a holistic approach to patient care. The campus is strategically situated in Lebanon to address the healthcare needs of the Pacific Northwest, with a particular focus on serving rural communities.

Addressing Rural Health Disparities through Targeted Programs

Understanding the unique challenges faced by rural populations, COMP-Northwest has developed initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery in these areas:

  • Rural Health Track: This program provides students with didactic and experiential learning opportunities in rural settings, preparing them to serve as leaders in these communities. Students engage with local healthcare providers and participate in community-based projects, gaining firsthand experience in addressing rural health challenges.
  • Service-Learning Projects: Medical students collaborate with local organizations, such as the Lebanon Fire District and Mennonite Village, to provide health education, preventive care, and support services. These partnerships not only enhance student learning but also contribute to the well-being of community members.

Community Engagement: Building Stronger Connections

COMP-Northwest actively fosters relationships with the local community to promote health and education:

  • Health Career Ladder Program: Aimed at inspiring K-12 students and their families from Lebanon and surrounding areas, this program encourages pursuit of careers in healthcare. By providing mentorship and academic support, COMP-Northwest invests in the future healthcare workforce of Oregon.
  • Emergency Medical Services Collaboration: Through the WesternU Lebanon Fire District Emergency Alliance (WLEA), medical students volunteer as EMTs and first responders, gaining practical experience while supporting local emergency services.

Recognition for Excellence in Public Health

The dedication of COMP-Northwest students to public health has garnered national attention. For instance, second-year student Madeleine Duncan received the United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award for her work in establishing a mentoring program focused on healthy lifestyles for high school students in Sweet Home, Oregon. This initiative reflects COMP-Northwest’s commitment to addressing social determinants of health through education and mentorship.

A Shared Vision for Health Equity in Oregon

COMP-Northwest embodies the principles that FamilyCare holds paramount: equitable access to healthcare, community collaboration, and a focus on serving underserved populations. Through comprehensive medical education and active community engagement, COMP-Northwest is not only preparing future physicians but also directly contributing to the improvement of health outcomes in Oregon’s rural communities.
